1. Exclusive interview with Matteo Franceschetti, CEO of Eight Sleep
Matteo is co-founder and CEO of Eight Sleep, the tech-enabled mattress that adjusts its temperature to sleep quality. Disclosure: we are happy owners of Eight Sleeps (and Pomp, an investor).
1) Can you share data on how Eight Sleep has impacted your users?
Our research study shows that people experience a significant improvement in their sleep and cardiovascular health after using Eight Sleepβs Pod. Also, after one month of sleeping on the Pod, members reported 32% better sleep quality scores, on average. This overall improvement in sleep quality consists of improvements in each of the following components:
Deep sleep increased by 10% on average
34% higher daytime energy scores
23% fewer sleep interruptions
44% faster sleep onset
These levels of sleep quality improvements are comparable to improvements from cognitive behavioral therapy for sleep.
2) Is Eight Sleep using AI, and if so, how?
Yes, we use AI in our Autopilot temperature algorithm. We take in factors such as personal sleep history with the Pod, past temperature preferences, historical and real-time bedroom temperature, and historical and real-time local weather to change your temperature during the night seamlessly.
We also use AI for all of our sleep and health metrics. AI models process the sensor data to generate HR, HRV, Sleep Stages, and more with the Pod.
3) Eight Sleep costs ~$2K, making it too expensive for many users. What are your options and plans for cheaper products?
We create the highest quality products for our members, including not only advanced technology, but also ML algorithms that accompany the tech to make sure members sleep better each night.
When thinking about a product you sleep on for 8 hours a day everyday, the price you pay for better sleep is priceless.
4) What are the best non-fiction books you have read recently?
Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson.
Leonardo Del Vecchio Biography: The Life and Times of The Man Behind the Sunglasses by Laurel Paul.
Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Greatest Products by Leander Kahney.
5) Advice for young founders?
Chop wood and carry water. You make things happen through action. You have to spend each day trying to be 1% better through the actions you take. If you put in the work for all the right inputs, the results will come.
6) What is it like to have people like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg as passionate clients?
