Hassabis will become chair of Google DeepMind and assume the Alphabet chief scientist role.
Chief Scientist Jeff Dean is leaving Alphabet after 27 years to start AI startup Discovery Loop with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat.
Radical Ventures, Khosla Ventures and others backed Discovery Loop in a seed round, alongside Google.
DeepMind CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu will lead the unit as SVP, reporting to Sundar Pichai.
Gemini 4’s development will be led by Kavukcuoglu.

7. Hugging Face breach saw AI agents create unnoticed message board, OpenAI says
The agents shared exploits and planned the hacks on the message board, OpenAI researchers Eric Wallace and Michael Dalton said.
AI agents exchanged hundreds of thousands of messages on an internal OpenAI package manager, the researchers said.
OpenAI said it plans to tighten safeguards for high-risk AI evaluations.
